Alexis Sanchez flops in his first Premier League game under Solskjaer

Alexis Sanchez started a Premier League game for the first time under Solskjaer but the Chilean didn’t do much to suggest Anthony Martial should not come straight back in when he is fully fit. Sanchez worked hard as always but that extra zip that has been introduced under Solskjaer was missing whenever he was on the ball.

Manager rating out of 10

7 — After making changes against Burnley, Solskjaer went back to what has worked for him at the King Power, picking Ander Herrera in midfield and starting Rashford through the middle. He deserves credit for refusing to shut up shop and instead throwing on Martial in the second half despite coming under intense pressure as Leicester looked for an equaliser.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best. Players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK David De Gea, 7 — Produced a good save from Jamie Vardy‘s overhead kick in the second half and then made an even better one to keep out Ghezzal’s free-kick.

DF Ashley Young, 7 — Got forward a lot from right-back and could have been used more often had his runs been spotted. Covered a lot of ground up and down the right flank.

DF Luke Shaw, 7 — Lovely clipped cross to the back post to create a chance for Rashford inside the first five minutes. Threw himself into a challenge in the penalty area to deny James Maddison.

DF Victor Lindelof, 7 — On the end of a heavy challenge from Vardy in the first half that saw the Leicester striker rightly booked. Helped United keep a first clean sheet since Jan. 13.

DF Eric Bailly, 8 — Back in the team at the expense of Phil Jones. Nearly had his head taken off diving in front of a fierce strike from Demarai Gray that looked like it might worry De Gea.

MF Nemanja Matic, 7 — Took a tactical booking by hauling back to Ricardo Pereira to stop Leicester breaking. Occasionally risked a second but kept his discipline.

MF Ander Herrera, 7 — Rested against Burnley but back in here. Becoming just as important in Solskjaer’s midfield as Matic and Pogba.

MF Paul Pogba, 8 — Summed up United’s new style in creating Rashford’s goal. Won the ball high up the pitch and laid the chance on a plate for Rashford all within the blink of an eye.

FW Jesse Lingard, 7 — Had to work hard defensively to keep Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell in check. Saw one goal bound effort well blocked.

FW Alexis Sanchez, 5 — Starting a league game for the first time since Nov. 3 but didn’t make the most of his chance. Always seemed to be on the fringes when United went forward and was substituted early.

FW Marcus Rashford, 8 —Became the second youngest United player to reach 100 Premier League appearances. Missed an early header but produced a magical touch and finish to score from Pogba’s pass.

FW Anthony Martial, 6 — Could have scored on the break.

FW Romelu Lukaku, N/R — Forced Schmeichel into a good save moments after winning the ball himself near the half way line.

FW Phil Jones, N/R — On in injury time and headed a Leicester cross away.
