Manchester City's Raheem Sterling (centre) celebrates his sides second goal of the game during the Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester.

Man City went a goal ahead against Watford through controversial circumstances and Liverpool fans have reacted angrily to the decision on social media.

Sergio Aguero laid the ball off to Raheem Sterling who curved the ball into the net in the opening minute of the second half against Watford, but celebrations were quickly cut short as the linesman’s flag was raised.

Replays showed that Sterling was offside when he received the ball from Aguero, but a different angle showed that Hornets’ defender Daryl Janmaat actually played the ball onto Sterling, with the deflection lofting into the net.

Referee Paul Tienrey spent some time talking to his assistant on the sideline before blowing his whistle and pointing to the centre circle, indicating that the goal had been given and City were in the lead.

Watford has been resolute in the first half and frustrated City as the teams went in at half time with the score at 0-0.

But the second half wasn’t a minute old when they opened the scoring – with Sterling going on to complete his hattrick within the hour – and allowing the goal was a decision that sent Watford’s players and Liverpool fans into dismay.

A victory for City will put the Blues four points above Liverpool in the title race and some Reds supporters are now wondering how their team can compete when they get such decisions in their favour.
